PostSubject: 2009 Mt Stuart Tarmac Rally   Mt Stuart Hill Climb Icon_minitimeSun Jun 07, 2009 6:29 am

Well that time of the year again and the Annual Mt Stuart Tarmac Rally is on again. Although numbers were down this year there was still a good field of cars that were racing. This event is different to the other events held on Mt Stuart where it runs the full length of the track up Mt Stuart and is a full Rally Spec Event. You need the licence, the car and navigator to compete. It runs over the Queens Long Weekend during June and usually attracts some decent cars from down south to this event. There were only a couple cars that came up and the rest were local.

The big drawcards for this year would have to be the 2 GTR's competing in the event. The first is Grant Cooper's R32 GTR making a comeback from last year in the Hill Climb Series when it spat a conrod out the side of the block and has undergone a massive restoration and being built into a full track car. The next big drawcard is the R35 GTR from RGM Racing, this thing is brutal and attracts quite a crowd.

I couldn't make it to Saturday's Racing, however I got there for the start of Sundays racing and it was well worth getting up early. First took position at the second Spectator spot towards the summit looking over the valley and then had some shots down at the Pit area.

Strangely enough these events don't seem to attract big crowds, perhaps there isn't enough talk about it to give it the support it solely needs to keep operating. Combined with the Bitument Sprints, Hill Climb Series, Drag Racing and Motorkhana Events there is always something happening in Townsville Motorsport and for it to continue well into the future we need to support it to keep it going strong.

Here are some pics to entice some folk into making a trek to next years event.

It appeared he pushed pretty much the front end back and up, destroyed the intercooler, the radiator was pushed up (so most likely damaged the core or either end tank) and what ever lines (maybe tranny cooler line) and couple others aswell. I wouldn't be game to drive it again they loaded it on the truck to bring it back down the hill, I left before lunch so am not entirely sure what he did from then on. I wouldn't race the car any further, given the damage is pretty substantial and also the times he was running was pretty fast, in its condition it wouldn't be fast enough to bother racing (ie, cooling problems, boost leak from damage to intercooler and piping) so I would assume he is out for the rest of the event.

It is a bummer but he wasn't too worried about it, that's the name of the game, you race your car expecting to crash, if you keep the attitude that you won't crash and you do, you can only blame yourself and no one else. Sure enough Coop spent a great deal of time and money on his car and is a shame to see it come to such an abrupt end, but he will go back and fix it and be out competing in the other events soon enough. He has a great attitude to racing and fully understands the ups and downs of racing.

At the time he was 3rd fastest next to the Skelta and the R35, the Skelta set a time of 4.08 minutes and the R35 was 4.15 or something. Coops was 4.18 from memory with his fastest run.

Good Racing,

Nice, hope he didn't damage the dry sump header tank, it's behind the drivers headlight. Pretty sure he's still on low boost too so it's gonna be on like donkey kong when the motor is run in.

Yeah apparently he was only running about 350rwkw on the run in tune... man that thing sound angry even with that power.... can't wait to hear it screaming later in the year. Definitely a good car to watch race.

Everyone held their breath down at the pits when we could hear him go from full throttle to skidding, skidding, skidding and then crash and nothing... we were like WTF did he just go off... then radio was CRASH CRASH CRASH, and pretty much everyone went "Oh No".

Lucky they were fine and had a good chuckle afterwards.

Skelta G-Force S/C, has a Supercharged Honda F20C engine in it.... this thing hooks.... was at the last Hill Climb meet and my guess is it is a local car so expect to see it getting around a bit more.... very nice and potent.
