INTERNET users will face annoying "brownouts" that will freeze their web browsers when capacity runs out in cyberspace as early as next year, new research says.
Experts predict consumer demand, growing at about 60 per cent a year, could outstrip supply as early as next year because more people are working online and using bandwidth-hungry video and music websites.
Initially, web browsers will go offline for several minutes at a time. From 2012, however, they're likely to operate at a much lower speed, rendering the internet an "unreliable toy", Times Online reports.

| LMAO even if this was true, I'm pretty sure the internet mogules would have already found a way to increase the traffic capacity. I doubt Microsoft, Google, Facebook, Youtube etc. are going to let their empires go down in flames. | |

| I wouldn't be surprised if it happens, over the last 15 years internet usage has expanded exponentially. From people just using it for emails and referencing to now doing banking, working, selling and buying and even operating on people the internet has become a normal requirement for modern life. Unfortunately our technological expansion is slowing due to current methods and practices carried out in the technology sector, until they take the next step things will slow up. I think people believe are under the misconception of storage availability vs transfer availability. Heaps of storage in the world electronically, but the way that the data is transferred is somewhat being held back and the demand for internet traffic is quickly catching up to the supply that these mediums can transfer the data upon. | |

| yeah but when you think about how the internet would've started with 2 computers, then 10, then 1000, then 1 million and it hasn't crashed yet. i haven't read anywhere that Nostradamus has predicted the crash of the internet so it's not going to happen unless jesus hacks the mainframe. | |

| I highly Doubt that the "Internet is running out". the only times you see a delay or slow loading site on a fast connection is when its on a puppy host. if every host changed to the current highest speed (fibre or 100mb) like 99% of american/chinese/japanese servers the worlds "intraweb" would be much more streamlined.
To be honest, i think the speeds that they are trying to achieve are bullshit, they should cap a home/small office/businesses connectoin speed at a peak transfer rate of 100mb/sec (fibre) and for hosting companies etc have the absolute peak as 1gb/sec or higher (fibre's fastest speed) there would never be a shortage.
who needs 100mb/sec transfer at home? im pretty sure 75% of people couldnt tell the difference on a porn site from 1.5mb ro 20mb...
Just my 2cents |

| Australia is so far behind in our connection speeds and what we pay for our connection its not funny
After doing some research its not about it running out, its like 819FLY has said, its the transfer of the internet thats causing the issue. The supply and demand for it is ever increasing, so it was only a matter of time before it starts to choke up

| which is exactly the reason why a host company should ALWAYS have a faster connection bandwidth then the client (unless client is a corporation etc then it should be even)
Australia's telecommunications system is s-hithouse compared to a oversea's example. 1gb is the mainstream connection in Hong Kong, yet Australia struggles to get 24mb to every house in the country....
makes me want to move to japan even more. |

| Even in Indonesia they have faster speeds than us! You can go up to the food court and surf wirelessly for FREE at speeds we haven't even come close to.
Australia has so many more benefits than any other country in the world you'd be a fool to cry over our internet speeds.
